How To Prepare For A Boudoir Photoshoot?

Hello! I’m Laura, Leeds Boudoir Photographer and here to help YOU prepare for a boudoir photoshoot!

So you’ve booked a boudoir photoshoot?

Congratulations! That in itself is a huge thing as I know just how nerve wracking it can be to even make that first step! So you’re all booked in and now you’re wanting to get photoshoot-ready.
Well there are some major do’s and don'ts to prepare for a boudoir photoshoot.  It’s very easy to fall into the trap of wanting to transform yourself beyond recognition but this is not a good idea! You still want to look like you. After all - these images will last a lifetime!

What NOT to do:

So here’s what NOT to do before your session.

Spray Tans
I say this with love, but it’s something I’ve seen time and time again. Do NOT get a spray tan unless you’re 150% sure it’s going to look stunning and natural. If you don’t have regular spray tans, now is not the time to try it out! I know a lot of people worry about looking pasty or pale but far better to look a normal colour than bright orange!
You also run the risk of getting tan on your photographers sets/sheets etc and could land yourself with a cleaning fee which you really don’t want!

Starve Yourself
I know, I know. You book a boudoir photoshoot and immediately go “right best shift some weight”. This is NOT a good attitude to have. In fact it’s exactly the opposite of what a boudoir session is for. A boudoir photography session helps you to LOVE your body. Love the skin you’re in. Not try and change it! If you want to get fit and healthy before your session - go ahead. But if you’re going to aim to drop a dress size in two weeks it’s just not worth it. The same goes for the morning of the session. It’s very tempting to miss breakfast but trust me when I say, boudoir photoshoots are HARD. You’ll need your strength and you don’t want to feel rubbish and shaky during your session because you’ve got low blood sugar. Instead opt for a nice light healthy breakfast and plenty of water!

Damage Your Skin
Try your hardest to look after yourself on the run up to your session. After all, the skin you’re in is your main outfit and this is a key tip to prepare for a boudoir photoshoot. This includes not getting sunburn or tan lines that will be visible during your shoot. Take extra care before your photoshoot - we don’t want any big black and blue bruises on your shins from where you went rock climbing the week before your session! Think carefully about yout diet and beauty regime before your photoshoot as well. Drink plenty of water, there’s nothing worse than dry skin from dehydration and breakouts from too much caffeine and a bad diet. I know it sounds boring - but doing this will all help towards making you look and feel amazing for your photoshoot!

What TO Do:

Book your beauty appointments:
Take the stress away! Again, these images are going to last a lifetime, so why not take the pressure off and be sure to be looking and feeling your best. Get your hair done, book a professional makeup artist, and get those nails looking tip top. This is a photoshoot ALL about your beautiful body - so make it sparkle!

Get your body photoshoot ready:
Diet is key in this one. You want to up your water intake as much as possible. Here comes the fun police…But if you can cut out (or at least cut down) your alcohol, caffeine and sugar intake, not only will you see a difference in your skin but you’ll also feel so much better for your shoot!
Exfoliation is another big recommendation for me. It really does make such a difference and if you’re like me and find you have bumpy skin around your triceps and back/side of the thighs - this will transform you! Don’t forget, professional cameras pick up every little detail so you want your skin to be as photo ready as possible.

Go Shopping!
I’ve said it a couple of times already, but I really do feel the need to hammer home the fact that these images are forever. So please don’t go “oh I’ll just bring whatever I’ve got in my underwear drawer”. I know how women work, I know we’ve all got underwear in our drawers that should have been thrown away and updated a long time ago. This really is the perfect opportunity to go out and buy yourself even just one, brand new outfit that makes you feel INCREDIBLE. After all, boudoir photography is all about making you feel exactly that way. There’s never a bad time to treat yourself to some sexy new underwear!

Stretch:
This one might seem slightly random, and it’ll depend a lot on your photographer and what sort of poses they have you doing. But if you’re coming to me - please start stretching! During a lot of my photoshoots I have my boudoir clients arching their backs like they’ve never arched before. It makes such a difference to making your images look incredible if you can nail the pose. And most people don’t often arch, in fact we spend most of our time hunched over computers and desks so clients who don’t prepare, often find themselves very achy the next day!

My final bit of advice would be to turn up to your photoshoot in loose clothing so you don’t start your boudoir session with lines from your jeans all the way down your legs!

So there you have it - they are my top tips to prepare for a boudoir photoshoot! But above all else - ENJOY IT! Boudoir photography is, for most people, a once in a lifetime experience - and whilst I know you’ll be nervous - do try and embrace it! You’ll love it and you’ll love your images - promise!

What Is A Boudoir Photoshoot?

What is a boudoir photoshoot?

Your boudoir photoshoot, explained

A boudoir photoshoot is an investment in yourself, a celebration of your body, it’s an empowerment session. Something to instil you with a confidence you’ll never let go of, and help you to see how beautiful you really are! Whilst a lot of people will see “just sexy photos” (and there’s NOTHING wrong with that), it’s so much more than that. The way it lifts us up, helps us love our bodies, helps us see what our loved ones see when they look at us – it’s something truly spectacular.
I grew up in an era of women being scrutinised by the media. Unhealthy diet fads/trends and body images were everywhere. Cellulite/rolls/bad skin being highlighted and splashed all over the front of magazines. Celebrities having to “bounce back” to their pre-baby body in record time otherwise they’d “let themselves go”. So toxic. And I believe we’re all still healing from that.
And that’s where I come in, that’s where this photoshoot plays its part. The importance of realising our worth is not determined by how we look. We are all beautiful – to paraphrase Bridget Jones – … just as we are.

When should I book in for my boudoir photoshoot?

Now. No really… Now!
I’d book as far in advance as you can. I have clients booking in up to 18 months in advance!
What are you waiting for? Let me tell you, “the right time” doesn’t exist. By all means, get yourself prepped. Book in for a haircut/nails appointment/ waxing etc, but other than that, get it booked!
If you’re wanting the images for something in particular, for example, loads of my clients do their shoots as a gift for their partner, or a wedding/anniversary present, or even for themselves to celebrate a birthday. For these occasions, I’d advise booking in for your session at least 8 weeks in advance. This allows plenty of time for the photoshoot, viewing session, and to order any products you may wish to purchase. Wall art/albums etc can take up to 4 weeks to turn around.
Also if you’re thinking of taking advantage of one of the pre-payment plans, you need to give yourself time to pay in instalments!

How do I prepare for my boudoir session?

I will send you out a full prep guide when you book in with me and always offer a pre-shoot consultation. The guide talks you through preparing your whole body, from eating well to waxing & exfoliation. I also send out advice on your boudoir photoshoot wardrobe. Outfits can make or break a photoshoot so I always encourage my clients to get in touch with me if there’s anything they’re not sure on! Plus those all important on-the-day tips, such as not wearing anything tight that will leave marks on your skin for the photoshoot.

What happens at my boudoir photoshoot?

A boudoir shoot typically lasts around 2 hours. If you’re having professional hair & make up (you must have booked this with me first – ideally as far in advance of your session as possible to ensure availability) – that will be done at the studio the hour before your session start time. Then we’ll have a chat through your outfits, decide which ones will work best with which studio set ups, and get going! I’ll guide you through the whole photoshoot, tell you how to pose and exactly what to do. You don’t have to worry about a thing!
It’ll only be the two of us in the studio, so you can relax with me. I’ve done my own boudoir photoshoots before so when I tell you I know how you feel…  I really do!

prepare-for-a-boudoir-shoot

I can't pose/I'm not sexy!

Firstly, you can & you are!
Secondly, I got you.
I will not only tell you exactly how to pose, but I’ll show you what I want you to do too. Most of the images you’ll be looking down/eyes closed/ away from the camera. I won’t ask you to pout or pull a “sexy” face at the camera! It’ll be great fun, and you’ll nail it. The only thing I will warn you of… it’s HARD work. You may well feel like you’ve done a full body work out after the photoshoot!

Leeds-Boudoir-Photographer

What should I bring for my boudoir photoshoot?

Outfits you LOVE!
As I said above, the right or wrong outfit choice can make or break a boudoir photoshoot. If you love it and it makes you feel good, it’ll show on camera!
My photoshoots are about you & your body, so I don’t tend to do much with props, but I have had clients bring in items to personalise their photoshoot. Particularly, for example, if it’s for a gift. Your partners motorbike helmet, a golf club, his shirt, his tie, a rubgy ball… you get the idea. So this is an option for you if you want it!
Heels & accessories/jewellery can really finish off an outfit too. You can also bring make up/moisturiser/deodorant/robe etc so you’re as comfortable as possible. But I do have similar bits to hand at the studio in case you forget!

How many outfits should I bring?

We’ll aim to shoot up to 3 outfits, but you can bring as many as you’d like with you. I’ve had clients turn up to the studio with a suitcase that looks like they’re moving in for the week! I’ll help you narrow down your options to the best ones. If you’re unsure on your outfits, we can always do a little try on session before we start shooting and I can give you my advice on which pieces will work best.
I also have bits at the studio that you can use such as stockings/heels/body chains/bodysuits. If you’re using any of my outfits for your session, you’ll need to wear your own thong underneath.

Do I need to buy new underwear?

Yes.. and no. It depends what you’ve already got! I do however, think a boudoir photoshoot is an excellent excuse to treat yourself to some lovely new pieces and make you feel extra special!
Try and avoid bringing anything that no longer fits you properly or perhaps looks a bit old & tatty.
In my prep guide I’ll give you advice on where to shop and I do break it down into low, middle and high end budget sections.

How much does a boudoir photoshoot cost?

My sessions are £80. This non-refundable booking fee covers our pre-shoot consultation, your in depth prep guide, my time in the studio, the up to 2 hour long shoot, and your images retouching ready to view. This price does not include any images.
Prices for smaller collections of digitals start from £349 and are better suited for smaller budgets.
Most of my clients opt for one of my all inclusive packages which start at £749 but include ALL your images from your session PLUS a gorgeous printed product. These have been specifically designed to be the best value for money. I also offer prepayment plans to make this often once-in-a-lifetime experience more affordable!  You can see my full boudoir price list here: Price List

Leeds-Boudoir-Photographer

How long after the photoshoot until I can see my images?

For your viewing you have two options. Return to view or same day viewing.

My same day viewings are quickly becoming my most popular choice amongst my clients who can’t wait to see their images or need them turned around faster!
With this, we’d shoot 10am-12/12:30pm. You’d nip off for some lunch 12-2pm ish and then come back to view your images 2-3pm. So it’s a full day with me but the whole process is taken care of. For same day viewings, your images will not be fully edited, but they will look as as close as possible to the final result.

Another option is to return for a viewing. This is where you’ll be invited back to your “view and order” session usually around 2 weeks after your session. This gives me time to select the best images from your session, fully retouch them and get them ready for you to see.

I need my images for a specific date - how far in advance should I book?

Ideally at least 8 weeks. This gives us time to schedule your photoshoot, viewing, and if you’re opting for something like an album, it allows time for the production turnaround. If you’ve got less than 8 weeks until you need your photos, I highly recommend booking a same day viewing.

Leeds Boudoir Photographer

Can my photos remain private?

Of course! I love it when my clients allow me to use their photos, but it’s completely your decision. I will ask you about your image preferences, and if you’d prefer I use unrecognised photos, or only post them in my VIP group, that’s absolutely fine. Equally, if you know you’ll be happy for me to share your images, please let me know in advance of your session so I can take some behind the scenes shots of me working and include a special gift for you!

Where are you based?

My studio is nestled in Esholt woods which is North/West Leeds. Just off Apperley Lane in Rawdon, you’ll find me in a beautiful business park that used to be a working farm before it was converted! My boudoir studio is totally private and you will have a designated parking space for your session.

I do have clients travel to me from all over the U.K and I am more than happy to provide recommendations for hotels if you’re planning on staying over in Leeds.

If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Please do follow me on instagram: Leeds Boudoir Instagram

And come and join my private facebook group which is full of past, and present clients. See questions they’ve asked, videos posted by me, session advice plus be the first to know about offers and exciting news!

Hopefully that’s answered all the questions you might have about a boudoir photoshoot, but if there’s anything else or you just want to have a chat, I’m here! We can organise a phone or zoom call or even an in person meeting to talk through everything if it would make you feel more comfortable.
I can’t wait to hear from you & create some stunning empowering photos of you, for you to treasure forever!

Lots of love, Laura x

Boudoir Photography Leeds | Alice

Boudoir Photography Leeds | Alice

Boudoir Photography Leeds.
Alice came to my Leeds-based studio for her boudoir session a few months ago. She knew she wanted to have a boudoir shoot before her wedding in July so that she could surprise her husband-to-be with the pictures on the morning of their wedding!

Alice did EVERYTHING right in preparation for her boudoir shoot. I always send my clients a preparation guide but it's so nice when they follow my advice!
She'd gone out and bought new underwear (she got lots of lovely bits from Boux Avenue), she'd had her hair and nails done, and other than acquiring a huge bruise on her leg (an accident though!) she was ready to go!

As it was sort of a bridal boudoir shoot, we did the first set of images in a lighter coloured underwear set with more reserved poses and slightly softer lighting. We then moved on to darker sexier underwear and poses to match of course!

Alice absolutely rocked her session and loved her images! When she came back to her 'view and order' session she got 20 digital images and a huge framed piece of wall art that she surprised her husband with on the morning of their wedding!
When he saw me that day, he was very impressed and very grateful!

50th Birthday Boudoir Shoot

50th Birthday Boudoir Shoot

Hitting 50 years young is a milestone worth celebrating, and what better way than with a 50th Birthday Boudoir Photoshoot? It's not just about capturing stunning images; it's about embracing the incredible journey you've had, the wisdom you've gained, and the radiant person you are today. I know some ladies hate talking about age and seriously resent getting older. But growing old is a privilege and one that we should be thankful for. Think about yourself in your twenties and thirties, you probably gave yourself a hard time about how you looked and didn't love your body enough. And now you look back on photos from you at that age and think "my god what was I thinking! I looked incredible!". Well the same will apply to these images in another 20 or 30 years time.
So step into your 50s with confidence, grace, and a sprinkle of sass! Whether you're celebrating solo or sharing the experience with a loved one, a Boudoir Photoshoot at 50 is an investment in yourself and a celebration of the amazing person you've become.

Kerry booked in for a 50th birthday boudoir shoot and what a way to celebrate a milestone birthday!

"Fierce at 50" is how I would label this shoot, and Kerry!
Kerry contacted me to book in for a boudoir photoshoot having done her previous one 10 years ago. After her ex husband didn't appreciate the last photos, this photoshoot was all about her! I loved her confidence and her attitude! Kerry really wanted to update her photos to show off her new tattoos and her now trademark red hair.

Kerry came for her shoot on her birthday. She'd had her hair done by her own hairdresser, and the lovely Charlotte did her make up at the studio.
Kerry had an amazing range of outfits that I was so excited to shoot her in! We made sure to show off her amazing tattoos and her fiery red hair as much as possible!
Kerry chose an incredible photo to be printed and framed which would then be hung above her bed! Her other images were taken away on the day on a USB stick.

Boudoir Photographer

A Boudoir Photographer's Boudoir Photoshoot

Hi, I’m Laura, A boudoir photographer based in Leeds, UK. As a boudoir photographer, it’s the easiest thing to shoot many a boudoir photography session, without ever doing one yourself.
Hiding behind the camera is where it’s at for me. It’s where I am my most comfortable.
However, I knew that this wasn’t right. I HAD to experience boudoir photography from my clients point of view. To be able to say – “I know how you feel, I know its daunting, I know its scary”… and MEAN it!
This, I think, allows me to connect with my clients so much better. I am confident now in knowing I can answer any question a client may have, because I’ve done it… multiple times now!

I first wrote this blog back in 2019 after doing my very own boudoir session. And I’ve just written an update in 2024 to talk about how differently I feel now about my boudoir shoot.

2018 Boudoir Photoshoot

Obviously I couldn’t do my own shoot, so I roped in my lovely friend, Kirsty. I taught Kirsty boudoir photography at a studio I used to work at. So I know that she’s good, because she learned from the best 😉 haha!
No but seriously, I trusted her and she did an amazing job. I think she was nervous, as I would be if I were to shoot for a fellow photographer ! But she nailed it.
And when I saw my images, I was over the moon. I was so happy with how they looked, I couldn’t have asked for more.
I knew I wanted to do the shoot prior to Christmas, mainly so that I could eat what I wanted over the festive period without worrying about fitting into my outfits after! But actually, my shoot had the exact opposite effect on me. I was so in love with my images and the way my body looks right now (I think I’m the slimmest I’ve ever been!), that it was the motivation I needed to keep my eating under control and to maintain my new figure!
What I learnt from my shoot was, yes it’s scary/nerve-wracking, yes it requires a certain element of preparation (I now send out a full prep guide to my clients prior to their session), and yes, it’s hard work – I don’t think I’ve ever ached so much as I did the day after!
But… What was most important, was that I learned, it was SO worth it!

2024 Update

It’s so alien to me, looking back on the text above and not recognising the person who wrote it. Truth be told, in 2018 I split up with my partner and it threw me. We were together for a long time, during some of the most formative years of my life. And though the break up was amicable, and ultimately what I wanted.. it turned my world upside down.
I ended up living on my own for the first time, with my dog, trying to sustain my business and the studio I’d just taken on. I worked 4 jobs just to try and keep my head above water.  I lost a TON of weight and was indeed, my slimmest ever. But unlike the paragraphs above, I no longer look on that fondly. I was slim because I wasn’t eating properly or taking care of myself. I look back at those boudoir images now and don’t recognise the girl in them. She has a great figure for sure… but it’s not me.

That might sound a bit crazy because obviously it’s me, but it’s not the real me. Does this make sense? Anyway, since then, I’ve gotten into the habit of taking more and more images of myself. I try and do some kind of boudoir photoshoot each year if I can. And I watch my body change all the time. I’m now probably 2 stone heavier than I was when I did my first session, but I feel like me again now. I recognise myself, and I know that those extra couple of stone are because I’m happy. And yep, I absolutely put weight on when I’m happy. And I’m okay with that.

Don’t get me wrong, doing that boudoir shoot in 2018 was exactly what I needed at that point. It was the confidence boost I needed and it made me feel incredible and worthy of being loved again. So it absolutely played it’s part in my life at that time, and every time I take pictures of myself now, it gives me the little boost I need, even now that my body is bigger. And that’s the beauty of a boudoir photoshoot. It does exactly what you need it to do.

This is why I’m constantly trying to tell clients that waiting for the “right time” isn’t what a boudoir photoshoot is all about. It’s about learning to love your body, just the way you are, right now. Sure if you want to do another one in a year or two if your body has changed massively, go ahead! But putting off something so uplifting and empowering until you’ve “lost the weight” or whatever, is a bit of an oxymoron.

Phewwwwww, it got deep there for a minute! If you stuck with me through this rambling blog then I thank you! And I encourage you to get in touch with me and take those first steps to booking your own boudoir shoot. Now you know, that I know, exactly how you feel. I’ve got you. I’ll guide you. You just need the courage to show up. And you’ll be so glad you did.
